A novelist, Rahul, meets Jui and is allured by the way her life shapes up. Played by Rituparna Sengupta, Jui takes a huge step by moving to Kolkata following the demise of her parents. While in Kolkata, she begins to work as a bar singer in the city and there she meets Rajesh Sharma. The two get married, however, things get worse for her as she is forced into the world of prostitution and goes on to become an escort. Rahul, a novelist, meets her and pens her entire story which is very different from that of an ordinary girl.
The film tries to portray the fragility and vulnerability of a woman in flesh trade but pays very little attention to the execution of such a sensitive issue. With no high points in the plot whatsoever, it eventually falls flat on its face. And on the audience's part, it seems almost unjust to judge the performances of experienced actors who have fallen prey to a mind-numbingly bad script.
Jui (Rituparna Sengupta) is a hardened prostitute with a bleak past. Her parents had perished in a political riot and a trusted neighbour Natabar (Kharaj Mukherjee) accompanied her to Kolkata where she eventually took up the job of a bar singer before joining the flesh trade. She meets Badshah Moitra one night when his car breaks down in the middle of a red-light area.
If the title of the film suggests eroticism, you're right. And five minutes into the movie, if you begin to find similarities with the 2004 release, Chameli, you are also right. Making an unofficial remake isn't exclusive to Tollywood. But this film borrows way too much from Chameli but loses the plot entirely in the second half, turning into a tacky, plot-less movie masquerading as realistic cinema.
The only saving grace is seasoned actors who play their parts well. In the end, it's all sex and sleaze. Raater Rajagandha is the kind of movie that uses a woman's poster in a risque decolletage top to lure audiences to the theatre but lacks the storyline or the filmmaking finesse to make them sit through it. Rituparna Sengupta, who gave a powerful performance in Rajkahini last year, slips into the character of an escort with effortless ease. Rajesh Sharma, as the gang leader, Bhulu, who kills people at the drop of a hat, tries his best to make his character look a tad believable. Monchora is a really sweet start to the New Year — a simple tale told in such a minimalistic way by Sandip Ray that it reminds us of the wonderful Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Basu Chatterjee films of yesteryears. That makes it a rare treat — something hard to come by in today's world of sex and violence-laced pseudo-realistic cinema.
For starters, let's dwell on the storytelling. The director, apparently, hasn't taken too much liberty with the original by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. As a result, this simple, mundane tale of a thief, Dibakar, who turns a new leaf with Nanda's help, is so humane at its core that it doesn't need anything else to connect with the audience. Moreover, the elements of humour, romance and intrigue have been knit so subtly into the narrative that it seems nothing more than a slice of life. But it's the overall positivity of the film that touches you. A seasoned thief, whose past is as big a mystery to the Choudhury family as it is to the audience, not only brightens up Nanda's life, but also that of her philandering brother, Manmatha, and grandfather, Jadunath. And all throughout, there's not one instance of overacting or melodrama. Even the amorous relationship between Manmatha and Julie (June) is presented in a very modest, mature and at times, humourous way.
It's certainly the director's film, but it's the actors who made it so believable. Paran Bandopadhyay's grandfather act is natural, effortless and a treat to watch. And so is Saswata's lost-in-love performance. Abir and Raima, too, have put in subtle and beautiful performances. June is also good as Manmatha's lover with a hidden motive. In short, the actors have been used in a very balanced and beautiful manner and they have done complete justice to their roles.
The best part, however, is the fact that the film has no songs, though the background track melds with the narrative, supporting the visuals totally. The lack of songs also keeps the story short and crisp; hence, it's a treat that lasts just one and a half hours. The camerawork is good, not that the film demands anything extraordinary. The approach here, too, is very balanced. No unnecessary close-ups, most shots traditional and soothing, no jerks or sudden zooms for the kicks — in a nutshell, a smooth, simple approach, just like the rest of the film. The credit definitely goes to Sandip Ray, who has created on-screen magic. He has given Bengali movie-goers a New Year gift that's a must-see for all those who value good stories and great performances. It's your turn to return the favour. Go and watch Monchora . A seasoned thief, whose past is as big a mystery to the Choudhury family as it is to the audience, not only brightens up Nanda's life, but also that of her philandering brother, Manmatha, and grandfather, Jadunath. And all throughout, there's not one instance of overacting or melodrama. Even the amorous relationship between Manmatha and Julie (June) is presented in a very modest, mature and at times, humourous way.
It's certainly the director's film, but it's the actors who made it so believable. Paran Bandopadhyay's grandfather act is natural, effortless and a treat to watch. And so is Saswata's lost-in-love performance. Abir and Raima, too, have put in subtle and beautiful performances. June is also good as Manmatha's lover with a hidden motive. In short, the actors have been used in a very balanced and beautiful manner and they have done complete justice to their roles.
The best part, however, is the fact that the film has no songs, though the background track melds with the narrative, supporting the visuals totally. The lack of songs also keeps the story short and crisp; hence, it's a treat that lasts just one and a half hours. The camerawork is good, not that the film demands anything extraordinary. The approach here, too, is very balanced. No unnecessary close-ups, most shots traditional and soothing, no jerks or sudden zooms for the kicks — in a nutshell, a smooth, simple approach, just like the rest of the film. The credit definitely goes to Sandip Ray, who has created on-screen magic.
